In order to improve the on-site experience for autistic individuals and their families, the St-Hubert Foundation provides its clients with several preparatory tools.
Soon, I will be eating out at the St-Hubert Express.
I can go by myself, with my family or with friends.
During my visit, I will order my meal at the counter.
To get ready, I can look at the menu on the St-Hubert website before I go. (More pictures of the meals are also available on the app).
When I arrive at the restaurant, I will walk up to the counter to order my food with the cashier.
If there are people ahead of me, I will wait in line for my turn.
Above the counter, there is a big screen that displays the menu. I can look at it to help me choose what I want.
I can also ask for a printed delivery menu or use the St-Hubert app on my cell phone.
When I have made my choice, I will tell the cashier what I would like. Then, I will pay for my meal.
Before I get my meal, I may need to wait near the counter for a few minutes. In some restaurants, the cashier will give me a pager. If I get a pager, I can go sit at any table while my food is being prepared.
If I want to, I can also ask for a sensory kit.
If I have a pager, I will sit at a table and wait for a few minutes until my food is ready.
While I wait, I can use the timer in the sensory kit.
The sensory kit includes a Tangle, noise-cancelling headphones, a stress ball, a popping game (Pop It) and a timer.
A communication board will even make it easy for me to say what I need, without using words, by pointing at the pictograms!
If the pager starts to vibrate, it means my meal is ready!
I will go back to the counter and give the pager to the cashier to pick up my meal.
I can go to the self-serve station for my beverage and condiments.
I can pour my BBQ sauce, take ketchup, choose my soft drink or get coffee.
Then, I can sit at a table of my choice with my tray.
I can now enjoy my meal.
When I’m finished, I will clean up by clearing my table and taking my tray to the tray return shelf (tray terminal).
I will walk to the tray return shelf near the entrance and place my tray on a shelf.
There is one last step before I leave.
I will return the sensory kit and everything inside to the cashier at the counter.
